Israeli architecture was and is still influenced by the International Style, and specifically by the Bauhaus school, with some local modifications. The Bauhaus approach to design began permeating into what was then Palestine under the British Mandate, and developed quickly and strongly in the emerging state of Israel. The International Style was introduced into the country by young architects, many of German extraction, some of whom had trained or taught at the Bauhaus, most of whom came with their families to to escape Nazism. Others came from Russia and Poland, competing their studies in Europe, absorbing the then emerging ideas of the International Style. The will to build a new society, uninfluenced by older European traditions caught on readily, and the simple forms of the Bauhaus were applied. Tel Aviv contains up to 1000 buildings in the Bauhaus idiom, designed using simple geometry, usually inexpensive buildings on small, regular, parcels of land. The technologwas also simple, using plastered and stuccoed block and concrete construction in a country lacking the elaboration of more traditional and expensive materials.This book describes a heritage that is only now being conserved and appreciated.

Ich habe dieses Buch aufgrund der 5-Sterne Bewertung gekauft. Denn das UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe soll 3'000 Bauhaus-Häuser in Tel Aviv umfassen. Doch davon sieht man in diesem Büchlein herzlich wenig:Von jedem gezeigten Objekt wird bloss eine einzige (!) Aussenfoto gezeigt, die zudem wie auf dem Umschlag zugeschnitten ist. Innenaufnahmen fehlen gänzlich. Total gibt es von 13 Objekten je einen (!) freigestellten Grundrissplan ohne Beschriftung, Kontext, Umgebung, Nordpfeil - einfach nichts. Schnitt- oder Fassadenpläne sucht man vergebens. Namen von Architekten und Jahrzahlen fehlen ebenfalls - geschweige denn, dass man etwas über deren Herkunft, Ausbildung und Auftragsumstände erfahren würde.Die Adressen sind zwar vermerkt, ein Stadtplan - wie man das von einem Architekturführer erwarten darf - fehlt jedoch. Wer also nicht schon in Tel Aviv wohnt, wird sich nicht zurecht finden oder an einer Schnitzeljagd via GoogleEarth beteiligen müssen.Fazit: Für das interessierte Fachpublikum untauglich. Mit dem Text habe ich mich deshalb gar nicht erst abgemüht und diese Fehlinvestition gleich fürs Brockenhaus bereitgelegt. Das Gezeigte hätte sich eher als Abreisskalender geeignet denn als ernsthafte Architekturpublikation.
dieses Buch habe ich als Geschenk erworben. Es ist ein wunderbares Buch, das die Bauhaus Geschichte in Tel Aviv nachvollziehbar macht. Ich habe dort viele Jahre gelebt und kenne viele dieser Gebäude. Ich habe es als sehr geschätztes Buch erworben und verschenkt. Sehr zu empfehlen.
